How To Maximize Your Credit Card Rewards During Black Friday

Black Friday is always one of the year’s most highly-anticipated shopping events. Even during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many experts predict a surge in consumer spending driven by eager deal-seekers.

If you plan to go shopping this Black Friday (whether online or in-store), play it smart and take advantage of your credit card rewards. These tips from Bald Thoughts will show you how to get the biggest bonuses possible while you save big on Black Friday sales.

Use The Credit Cards With The Best Bonuses

If your credit card comes with a generous rewards program, make sure you use it when you go Black Friday shopping. But to maximize your rewards, check which retailers and categories are eligible for points and cashback when you spend.

For example, for the fourth quarter this year, the Discover it credit card gives you 5% cash back on purchases from Amazon and wholesale clubs like Costco or Sam’s.

Also, keep in mind that some credit cards — like Discover — require pre-registration in order to get these rewards. Double-check your credit card to make sure you don’t miss any deals!

Buy Gift Cards, Get Rewards

If your Black Friday list includes many retailers that don’t qualify for points, don’t worry because you can still get rewarded for your holiday purchases and get everything on your list.

Chances are Amazon, gas stations, grocery stores, and other retailers that partner with your credit card company sells gift cards from the retailers that don’t earn you points. Use your credit card at the eligible vendor to get the gift cards you need, plus the points, and then use the gift cards on Black Friday.

For even more rewards, download Benefit or the United MileagePlus X app, which gives you immediate cash back or travel miles.

American Express Deals

If you have an Amex card from American Express, check out “Amex Offers” in your American Express account. Here, you can find tailor-made rewards and deals from the places you shop at the most. It’s an excellent way to save money on your favorite restaurants, hotels, and more.

If you have several American Express cards, make sure to double-check what deals are available for each one. Best of all, you can take advantage of these savings, whether you’re shopping online or in-person all year round. Just check your account every month or so to see what’s new.

Chase Deals

Chase is relatively new to the credit card rewards game compared to other companies, but these rewards are still worth checking out. Download the Chase Offers app to find what perks you can take advantage of this Black Friday.

Price Protection

Nothing is worse than seeing the price of an item drop after you bought it. However, if you shop with a credit card, you might be able to save yourself this pain.

Many credit cards offer Price Protection, which gives you a rebate on the difference between what you spend on an item and a better deal somewhere else. But keep in mind that not all credit cards have this perk, and even those that do might have different restrictions.

Typically, the credit card company will pay the difference up to a certain amount on qualifying purchases between 60 and 120 days after the original purchase. Also, there is a limit to how much you can get back, so keep that in mind.

American Express and Chase do not have a Price Protection program, but select Citibank and Capital One cards do. You can check to see if your card comes with this benefit or contact customer service.

Purchase Protection

If you buy an item and it is either lost, stolen, or damaged within a certain amount of time after the purchase, you may be eligible for a refund. Purchase Protection is particularly useful in cases where a merchant will not let you return an item since the credit card company will cover the item’s cost.

Extended Warranty

One reason why retailers push warranties is that they are a substantial source of revenue. Warranties may offer you peace of mind, but they sometimes have a serious price tag in addition to the cost of the product.

Luckily, some credit cards provide extended warranty programs, many of which last twice as long as the one you get from the manufacturer, or up to two years. Of course, you have to keep the receipt, but you should have nothing to worry about if you can hold onto it for safekeeping.

New Credit Card Bonus

Gift cards are one of the easiest ways to reach your credit card’s minimum spending limit. If you want to sign up for a credit card now, it may not arrive before Black Friday. However, there are plenty of holiday sales between then and Christmas, which means plenty of opportunities to maximize your credit card rewards.
